Steel, Wind & Water: Innovative Geotech and Building With Nature Approaches for Offshore Foundation Design and Development
During the International Partnering Forum (IPF) Conference & Exhibition, Holland Home of Wind Energy (HHWE), together with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York, in partnership with The Rich North Sea and Fugro have organized a Knowledge to Knowledge (K2K) session on the topic of: “Innovative Geotech and Building With Nature Approaches for Offshore Foundation Design and Development” on Wednesday April 30, 2025, 11:30am – 01:00pm EST.
How can upscaling of offshore wind be integrated with other economic uses and the environment, including shipping, fishing, oil and gas, military, aquaculture, recreation, and conservation? On the current trend, marine industrialization as a whole proceeds while conservation and restoration goals for marine ecosystems are poorly met. What are synergies of offshore wind and nature that support sustainable use and thriving seas? What kind of assets can support this and how can they be effectively implemented and monitored over their lifespan? There are many players in the ecosystems of the USA and the Netherlands who are helping to advance these best practices.
Agenda
The K2K will be kicked-off by two keynotes, each focused on these synergies and assets of wind farms, in particular the surface and geotechnical aspects of the large monopiles and seabed, observed and planned monitoring and engineering for potential nature enhancement.
This will be followed by a moderated Roundtable discussion with panelists who will include researchers and stakeholders of the Virginia-Atlantic, Cheseapeake Bay area ecosystems, as well as engineers and scientists with experience in nature inclusive offshore windfarms from the Netherlands.
Following the Roundtable the discussion will open up to all participants in attendance.
- Opening by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York
- Keynote 1: presentation of the Dutch experience by Christiaan van Sluis from The Rich North Sea and Kevin Smith from Fugro
- Keynote 2: Environmental monitoring – potential balancing of offshore wind and nature restoration in the US – focus on Mid-Atlantic by Dr. Deidre Gibson, Dr. Jeanette Davis and Dr. Joseph Reustle of Hampton University, with Dr. Dan Kuchma of Tufts University
- Moderated Roundtable discussion
