Strong onshore growth, offshore potential
Turkey’s wind energy sector has seen steady growth in onshore wind, making it a key pillar of the country’s renewable energy transition. While offshore wind development remains absent, the government has ambitious plans to explore its potential in the coming years.
Installed capacity and growth
- Total capacity: As of mid-2024, Turkey’s total wind energy capacity reached 12.77 GW, continuing an upward trend and reinforcing its position as one of the leading wind energy producers in the region
- Offshore wind: As of 2024, Turkey has no operational offshore wind capacity, despite previous discussions on developing the sector. While the Aegean and Marmara Seas have been identified as high-potential areas, no confirmed offshore projects are currently under development.
- Onshore wind: Turkey installed 426 MW of new onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2024, surpassing 2023’s total of 397 MW. The country is projected to add 1.35 GW of onshore wind capacity by the end of 2024, primarily driven by large-scale projects under the YEKA-2 scheme.
Government ambitions
- 2030 target: Turkey aims to install 30 GW of total wind energy capacity by 2030, with onshore wind leading the growth. While offshore wind was initially included in development plans, the lack of concrete projects suggests a longer timeline for offshore deployment.
- 2050 net-zero target: Turkey has not yet committed to a net-zero target by 2050, but wind power remains a crucial component of its National Energy Plan as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
Current and upcoming projects
- YEKA-2 Wind Projects – A major initiative adding 1 GW of new onshore wind capacity, led by EnerjiSA and Enercon, expected to be fully commissioned by 2025.
- Repowering of existing wind farms – Several older wind farms are being upgraded with newer, more efficient turbines, contributing to Turkey’s growing wind capacity.
- Potential offshore wind sites – Studies have identified the Aegean and Marmara Seas as potential locations for offshore wind farms, but no projects have been confirmed.
Recent developments
- Wind power investment auctions: In 2024, Turkey held its first renewable energy auction, which included large-scale wind projects. The government selected multiple consortiums to develop both onshore and offshore wind projects, with a focus on increasing the share of wind power in the country’s electricity generation.
- Technology and infrastructure improvements: Turkey’s domestic wind turbine industry is expanding, with local manufacturers playing a greater role in production. Additionally, the government is investing in grid infrastructure to support higher wind energy integration.
With 12.77 GW of total wind capacity as of mid-2024, Turkey is one of the fastest-growing onshore wind markets in the region
While offshore wind remains undeveloped, the country’s strong onshore expansion and policy support indicate long-term potential for further growth.
Turkey’s goal of 30 GW of wind energy by 2030 reflects its commitment to renewable energy expansion, with investment in wind technology, infrastructure, and repowering projects ensuring continued progress.
