OTC Asia

27 February @ 08:00 - 1 March @ 17:00

From February 27  to March 1, 2024, Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) will again organize a NL Pavilion at OTC Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Join NMT and leverage the network and the power of the NL Pavilion.

Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTC Asia) is where energy professionals meet to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge on offshore resources and environmental issues.

Malaysia’s shipbuilding and ship repair market

Malaysia is located on one of the world’s busiest waterways, the Strait of Malacca, and is also home to major ports and container terminals. The country has about 100 ship and repair yards. In 2022, Malaysian yards delivered 53 ocean-going vessels (25476 GT in total), most of which were tugs (source: IHS Fairplay). For the somewhat more complex ships and offshore structures built in Malaysia, the country relies in part on foreign engineers and ship offshore designs. The Malaysian government wants Malaysia to become a hub for shipbuilding and repair in the region. To encourage this, they are offering tax breaks to companies that want to invest in this sector in Malaysia.

About two-thirds of the 100 shipyards are located in western Malaysia, such as in: Lumut (Perak), Klang (Selangor), Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu) and Pasir Gudang (Johor). In East Malaysia, most yards are located in Sibu (Sarawak). Generally, they build less complex, small to medium-sized vessels, such as: tugs and pushers, ferries, fishing vessels, patrol vessels, short sea vessels and offshore supply vessels.

In addition to shipbuilding, shipyards also engage in repair work. In addition, there are some major shipyards in the country that can receive ships for repair up to about 450,000 tons displacement (DWT), such as: Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engineering (MMHE), Boustead Naval Shipyard (BHIC), Sabah Shipyard, Sapura Kencana, Nam Cheong and Muhibbah Marine Engineering.
